Trailing Jade (Crassula Sarmentosa): The Cascading Succulent Guide

The Trailing Jade (Crassula sarmentosa) is a beautiful and versatile succulent known for its vigorous, cascading growth and serrated, jade-green leaves. It's an excellent choice for hanging baskets, ground cover, or spilling over the edges of pots and rock gardens. This South African native is beloved by gardeners for its ease of care, resilience, and the delicate pinkish-white flowers it produces in late summer or fall.

Growing Tips

  • Light: Trailing Jade thrives in bright, indirect sunlight to partial sun. While it can tolerate some direct morning sun, it's best to protect it from harsh, intense afternoon sun, which can scorch its leaves. In lower light conditions, the plant may become leggy and lose its compact, full appearance. A location with bright, filtered light is ideal for maintaining its lush growth and vibrant coloration.

  • Temperature: This plant is quite adaptable but is not frost-hardy. It grows best in temperatures between 60°F and 75°F (15°C to 24°C). It can tolerate warmer temperatures but must be protected from freezing conditions. If you live in a climate with cold winters, it's essential to grow it in a container so you can bring it indoors when temperatures drop below 40°F (4°C).

  • Watering: Like most succulents, Trailing Jade is susceptible to overwatering. The "soak and dry" method is the best way to water. Water the plant thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. During the active growing season (spring and summer), this may be more frequent, while in the dormant winter months, watering should be reduced significantly.

  • Soil Preparation: Excellent drainage is crucial for preventing root rot. Use a well-draining soil mix designed for cacti and succulents. You can create your own by mixing a standard potting mix with perlite, coarse sand, or pumice to enhance drainage and aeration. A pot with a drainage hole is absolutely essential to ensure no water is left standing at the bottom.

  • Propagation: Trailing Jade is one of the easiest succulents to propagate, making it perfect for beginners and for sharing with friends.

    • Stem Cuttings: The most common and reliable method. Simply snip a healthy stem section, at least a few inches long. Remove the lower leaves to expose a clean stem.

    • Callous: Allow the cutting to sit in a dry, shaded area for a few days to a week to form a dry, protective callous over the cut end. This prevents rot when planted.

    • Planting: Once calloused, plant the cutting directly into well-draining succulent soil. You can either lay it on top of the soil or insert the bottom end into the soil.

    • Rooting: Place the pot in a warm spot with bright, indirect light. Water sparingly, just enough to moisten the soil, until new roots have formed and the cutting feels secure when you give it a gentle tug. Once rooted, you can move it to a brighter location and resume a regular watering schedule.
